Hi, How Are You? - Tips for Awesome Interviews

Ever want to snag a band for an after-show Q and A? Ever deal with an awkward interview situation? This round-table discussion will cover the basics of conducting great interviews as well as useful tips for talking with your favorite artists/politicians/etc for your zine. All experiences are welcome-- share your tips, tricks, questions, successes and horror stories. -Megan Quinn

Distro It Yourself
• 1:30pm - 2:30pm
This workshop will go step-by-step through the process of setting up co-op distribution by working with similarly-minded publications to get independently published zines, comics and books out into the world. Skills and techniques will apply to smallest scale publications. D-I-Y! -Joe Biel

DIY Screenprinting
• 2:45pm - 3:45pm
Always a Zine Fest favorite! Learn the basics of screenprinting in this hands-on workshop. Students will cut stencils out of mylar and print your own designs (bring clothes, paper, or any flat surface you would like the screenprint onto)! Several screens with pre-burned designs will also be available for printing. Discussion will include printing, screen construction, screen mesh, squeegee hardness, types of ink, emulsion coating and removal, and exposure of positive image. All inks, squeegees, and screens will be provided.

Q + A with Andy Hartzell
• 4pm- 5pm
Special Guest Andy Hartzell has carved out a unique creative niche for himself, pursuing a successful career as a writer and director of video games while continuing to write, draw, and self-publish some truly beautiful comics. His art is visually stunning, combining classic draftsmanship with bold experiments in form and layout. Andy will discuss the inspirations, craft, and thoughts which go into all of his work. A slide show of art and an audience Q + A will be included. -in conversation with Eli Bishop

An open and audience inclusive discussion about the role independent comic creators, publishers, and distributors play in the comics community and how we can work together using principles of community organizing and resistance.We're going to talk about the internet, drawing nights, DIY networks, stores, distributors, publishers, friends, fans, clients, media outlets, tours, pooled resources and convention. Bring your ideas.

Raising Kids and Raising Hell

A discussion of parenting zines and creating community. We’ll talk a little about the history of parenting zines, the need for parenting allies, and the importance of diversity to combat mainstream images and values towards parenting. Dialog is welcome, we’ll read a few short pieces… come and bring the kiddies…

So you’ve got zines under your belt and you want to take it to the next level. Do you ever wonder what it takes to start up and run your own magazine? Blood? Sweat? Tears? Maybe a little bit of all three? If anyone would know, it would be the hardworking people at the award-winning magazine Hyphen. Find out the answers to these questions and more at this talk by the Publisher and the Founding Editor. Followed by a short Q&A.

Bookbinding: Basics & Beyond

Ready to take your zines beyond the staple? Would you like to learn how to create blank journals or other small books? We will cover a variety of useful bookbinding techniques, including single-sheet folded books, single & double signature pamphlet stitch, stab binding, and more. Something for all skill levels! Materials included.

Gouache Painting – Tricks, Tips, and Techniques
• 12:00pm - 5pm, Both Days - Space 85 in the Exhibit Hall
Come watch painter/illustrator Eve Skylar work on some of her newest work in gouache - from start to (a reasonable) finish. She’ll be painting through most of the Zine Fest and will be on hand to answer questions about color mixing, paint handling, different tricks and tips, the illustrative process, and any other questions you might have! -Eve Skylar
